Article 20 protects individuals against arbitrary criminal laws. It guarantees: (1) no ex-post facto law (no retroactive punishment), (2) no double jeopardy (no person shall be prosecuted and punished for the same offence more than once), and (3) no self-incrimination (a person cannot be forced to be a witness against themselves). These protections are absolute, even during an emergency.
